Tootie Brown Bio I first heard the style of music that we dance to at the Ocean Plaza in Carolina Beach, NC while on vacation in July 1954. The Ocean Plaza was a dance hall located on the second floor with what seemed to be the longest stairs in the world. Being only seven years old and having no guts, I didn’t go up, but I hung around on the sidewalk out front and listened to my heart’s content. There had to be some young shaggers up there having a ball.” Seven years later, I learned to shag at the O. D. Pavilion to the jukebox.
I began my DJ career in January ’85 in Statesville, NC, at the Landmark Italian American Restaurant (we nicknamed it the LIAR’s Club).
I began playing at Duck’s in 1990 and have played there on and off for 18 years.
As a member of the Association of Carolina Beach & Shag Club DJ’s, I have DJ’ed all over the two Carolinas and from Baltimore, MD to Sebring, FL, and from North Myrtle Beach to Memphis.
My wife and I are members of The Sand Flea Living Legend Association and The National Living Legends of Dance. We have been married for 40 years.
I have played up and down the east coast from Pennsylvania to Florida including Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi, Indiana and Kentucky.
